TEACHER PROFILE
Johann Immanuel
HAMBURG/GERMANY
My journey with the handpan began about five years ago during a tour through Portugal. I more or less stumbled into a house where a handpan maker was living. Instruments were everywhere, a small handpan paradise. I was deeply drawn to the sound and ended up playing almost non stop for an entire week.
During my childhood and teenage years, I spent a long time playing the piano. While I am grateful today for this conventional musical background, at some point it began to feel restrictive and I eventually lost the joy of making music. Later on, I became part of a hip hop crew and started writing rap lyrics, until through a radical shift in my life that too no longer felt true.

The handpan opened up a completely new way of relating to music for me. Direct, simple and deeply felt. I could play right away, without instruction, without music theory and without anyone showing me how. Somehow it already sounded harmonious, to me and to the people around me.
From that moment on, I knew I wanted to have a handpan of my own as soon as possible. I gathered all my savings and with additional support from friends and family I was finally able to buy my first handpan. Not long after, I met Malte Marten. That encounter was deeply formative for my path. I received a great deal of support, both musically and on a human level.
During the pandemic, I began playing music on the streets. In that time, I did not only play a lot, I also learned a lot about myself. When I could no longer continue my previous work, street music became my only way to earn a living. That is exactly how it felt. I was playing to sustain my existence. Those days shaped my relationship with the handpan in a deep and lasting way. The foundation for my playing was born there.
Slowly, the handpan moved into the very center of my life. Alongside my work as a movement coach and somatic teacher, I began offering one to one handpan lessons. I also supported several handpan retreats, where I was able to observe closely, assist, and learn through shared experience.
Out of my friendship with Malte Marten, the largest project I have been part of so far emerged, the world's first handpan teacher training. I co created this training and continue to serve as its program lead and team coordinator. Being part of this project fills me with deep gratitude and quiet pride. As part of the Malte Marten Method team, I am also involved in developing online courses and further projects centered around the handpan and Malte Marten's ecosystem.
My own music is now available on all major platforms. In 2024, I began releasing music weekly on YouTube. My debut EP, Healing of the Sea, was released last summer and marks the first part of a trilogy. In early 2026, my EP Stress Relief will be released as the second part, followed by the third part later in the year.
For me, the handpan is a truly special instrument. Wherever it is played, something calm, peaceful, and honest tends to arise. It opens spaces where people can soften, listen, and come closer to themselves. That is what makes it so valuable to me.
I want to continue working toward making the handpan accessible to more people. I see endless potential in bringing people back to making music, back to their center, regardless of age, background, or where they come from. With its simple and intuitive design, the handpan offers an entry point like no other instrument.
